Sam Gilliam (1933–2022) was a groundbreaking African American artist associated with the color field movement. Come create art inspired by his hard-edge paintings.

Sam Gilliam (1933–2022) was a groundbreaking African American artist associated with the Color Field movement. He revolutionized painting by removing canvases from traditional frames and draping them like fabric, creating vibrant, sculptural works that blurred the line between painting and installation. Gilliam’s innovative approach challenged conventions and made him a key figure in modern art history.

In this program, we will use two of his Hard Edge Paintings to create inspired artwork. Sam Gilliam’s hard-edge paintings mark a distinct early phase (1963–1966) in his career, where he worked within Color Field and geometric abstraction traditions. This program is in recognition of the Black History Month. This program will take place in Children's Program Room.

This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library Montgomery County.
